How WPM Is Calculated

One "word" in WPM calculation equals exactly 5 characters including spaces — regardless of actual word length.

Net WPM = (Characters typed minus error characters) divided by 5 divided by minutes elapsed

Example: 250 characters typed in 1 minute with 10 error characters = (250 - 10) / 5 / 1 = 48 Net WPM.

Gross WPM ignores errors. Net WPM (used in most tests) penalises them. A high gross WPM with low accuracy is less valuable than moderate speed with near-perfect accuracy.
