Most resumes never reach a human recruiter — they're filtered out by ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software before any person sees them. Understanding how ATS works, and writing your resume to pass it, is the prerequisite for every other resume advice.

What ATS Does and Why It Matters

Every large Indian company — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Amazon, Google, all major banks — and virtually all MNCs use ATS. The software parses your resume looking for keywords that match the job description. Resumes missing key terms are rejected automatically, regardless of how strong the candidate is.

What ATS cannot read: text inside images or graphics, text in tables (in many systems), floating text boxes, decorative fonts, headers and footers, and multi-column layouts (some systems read only the left column).

What ATS looks for: specific keywords from the job description (exact matches matter), standard section headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills — not creative alternatives), dates in recognised formats, and clean parseable text.

ATS-Friendly Resume Structure

Order your sections: contact information at top, then professional summary, work experience (most recent first), education, skills, and optional sections like certifications or projects.

Formatting rules: Use Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, or Georgia at 10-12pt for body and 14-16pt for your name. Keep margins 0.5-1 inch. Submit as PDF unless Word is specifically requested. Limit to 1 page for 0-5 years experience, 2 pages maximum for experienced professionals.

Use the STAR format: Situation or Task (what you were asked to do), Action (what you specifically did), Result (quantified outcome).

Effective action verbs by function: Leadership — Led, Directed, Managed, Spearheaded. Technical — Built, Architected, Developed, Optimised, Automated. Business impact — Increased, Reduced, Generated, Saved. Analysis — Analysed, Identified, Evaluated, Measured.

Keyword Optimisation for Indian Platforms

Tailoring for Each Application

Generic resumes are less effective than tailored ones. For important applications: read the job description and list the top 10 keywords, ensure those exact keywords appear in your resume in natural context, reorder bullet points so most relevant achievements appear first, and adjust your summary to match the specific role. 30 minutes of tailoring dramatically improves callback rates for target roles.

India-Specific Resume Conventions

Photo: Many Indian companies expect a professional headshot. Use formal attire, white or light background, recent photo. Keep file size under 50KB.

Personal details: Date of birth, marital status, and languages known are commonly included in India though declining in modern tech applications.

CGPA: Include if 7.5/10 or above. Below this, omit it.

Projects for freshers: Technical projects compensate for limited experience. Include GitHub links, tech stack, and the problem you solved.
